Parc de les Glòries

Located at the intersection of the city's three main avenues, Glòries is today at the junction between the Cerdà expansion urban system and the future green axis that will connect the Trinitat, Sagrera and Ciutadella parks. Glòries represents an opportunity for creating a park-square that occupies the urban centrality that Cerdà had envisioned, including new contemporary dimensions such as biodiversity and climate comfort, as well as space for daily recreational activities.

The 'Urban Canopy' project plans a space of approximately 15 hectares for citizens' daily use. An open space for the city that replaces private vehicular traffic with more sustainable mobility and offers Barcelona an extensive and comfortable urban green space.

From a sustainability perspective, this park will have efficient water management. Rainwater will be recovered from the park and from the roofs of new buildings; and low water requirement vegetation well adapted to the climate will be planted (70% Mediterranean, 30% exotic). The plant density and new fertile soil will contribute to climate regulation, providing freshness and comfort in summer.

In the following posts, we will discuss the plant species from this park that are available at Sala Graupera.

To begin, we'll talk about Lomandra longifolia 'Tanika'.

_Lomandra longifolia_ 'Tanika' is a perennial plant from the Asparagaceae family, native to eastern Australia.

It is a rhizomatous plant of medium size, 50/60 centimeters high by 50/60 wide, with very decorative, linear and stylized foliage in bright green.

In our latitudes, it blooms from April to July, with yellow flower stalks.

It is a plant that establishes quickly in the ground, very versatile and highly drought-tolerant, as once planted in the ground, it requires no irrigation, only support watering during the 8-13 weeks after planting.

This variety of Lomandra is very hardy and allows us to create permanent green areas with very low maintenance needs.

It belongs to hardiness zone 9, with an average minimum annual temperature range of -6.6 / -1.2°C, showing resistance to light frosts.

It survives long periods without water, so in more humid regions or areas with risk of summer rains, if the ground remains excessively wet it may suffer from excess moisture in the basal zone.

In hot and arid areas, it can be used in all types of well-drained soils.

The use of this plant is not recommended in maritime dunes or areas with strong winds and high salt concentration.

Lomandra longifolia 'Tanika' prefers to be planted in full sun or moderate shade, which makes it a good candidate for use by architects and landscapers in roadside plantings, slopes and large green areas with difficult access. It is also advisable for designing modern urban spaces with limited water availability and maintenance work.

In our nursery we have this species available in 3L containers. It is a highly recommended and versatile plant that we encourage you to try.
