PHS flower show (I)

As we had already mentioned in a previous [post](http://www.salagraupera.com/es/bloc/item/115-plantas-y-jardines-para-este-ano), we present one of the garden festivals that took place this month in the United States, the **PHS Flower Show** in Philadelphia. This edition was presented under the motto "where art meets horticulture".

One of the gardens, work of landscape architect James Basson, is inspired by a painting by French painter Albert Diato and has been awarded a special prize for most innovative design.

The garden in which golden tones dominate, which are reflected in the painting, materializes after a laborious process of selection, drying and preparation of the vegetation in order to preserve it intact and avoid the loss of the golden color of the plants during drying.

Also interesting is the reflection that Basson proposes to us with this garden, where dry plants, autumnal coloring and a state of vegetation that is often avoided or transformed, is presented to us as a value, as a design object in itself and as a reflection of the natural dynamics of vegetation.

Here you have the [video](http://vimeo.com/88192579) where the author explains the garden and its construction process.

The landscape that the garden proposes to us leads us to talk about grasses; a grass that due to its bearing and coloring would give continuity to the idea of this garden would be **Stipa tenuissima** .

This herbaceous plant belongs to the Poaceae family and is native to the United States. It is mainly characterized by its luminous yellow color and its bearing in the form of hair or ponytail, which gives it a light and graceful appearance.

It is a plant that likes to grow in full sun. In its development it can reach 60cm in height, although the leaves can have greater length as soon as they curve and fall. While its width spans about 30cm.

Its flowering is what gives it that characteristic golden tone it has during summer and autumn. Its luminous green leaves give a certain continuity to the golden color of the spikes and confer chromatic dynamism to the vegetative mass.

It is a perennial herbaceous plant that does not present notable pest or disease problems. It tolerates all types of soils, but they must be well-drained. It is resistant to intense frosts, tolerating temperatures down to -15ºC.

It is a very simple plant to grow, requiring little care and very low maintenance. Its growth is fast and it is very resistant to lack of water.

It can be used as an accent among other plantings, as a border, in rock gardens, in pots or planted in mass. And its spikes can be used as dried flowers.
